How to Deliver Exceptional Customer Service in Your Restaurant Business

According to a recent BBC report, the COVID pandemic and its lockdowns seems to have awakened a Kraken (my term) – and now the food delivery apps want to eat your restaurant. Not your pizzas or your delicious lunches and dinners – they want your business!

Read on to discover the secret weapon the food industry may have up their sleeve to beat the odds, stay in business, and even thrive in the post-COVID recession, in spite of the food delivery apps...

Uber eats? When Silicon Valley apps start eating, guess who’s next on their dinner menu!

According to the BBC report,  “…the threat posed to restaurants by the dominance of platforms like DoorDash, Uber Eats and Deliveroo. Collin Wallace, former head of innovation at GrubHub, explains why these platforms continue to expand despite never making a profit. Food writer Jonathan Nunn discusses the breakdown of the relationship between customers and restaurants, and what that could mean for the future of the industry…”

What this means is that the restaurant industry is in trouble…BIG trouble! One of the lessons from the COVID crisis has been that it is simple pleasures like eating out at a restaurant with family or friends, or having lunch at an outdoor restaurant with co-workers and colleagues; that this is what life in the cities is really all about.

And this was in a pre-COVID climate where studies were showing that people had come to expect poor customer service in all sorts of business establishments, with restaurants top on the list!

Would you be surprised to hear that people (restaurant customers) are beginning to fall in love with the food delivery apps, with all their paraphernalia of artificial intelligence and algorithms, and God knows what else? Apps that COVID has now given the opportunity to smell your blood? The money, if you know what I’m saying…

The great news is that the food industry may have a secret weapon up their sleeve... superior customer service

One guru said this of superior service: “If you can’t win on a superior price, offer, quality, guarantee, sales pitch, experience, talent, skill, credentials, or anything else… you can always win on superior service.”

He didn’t stop there. “Customer service”, he added, “is the great equalizer… it is the proverbial nuclear bomb brought to a knife fight.”

The apps have got speed, they offer convenience for the laggards like me who may not mind eating packaged dinners cooped up at home from one month to the next – but I’m not most people…

Your nuke that you will bring to this knife fight is here guys and gals… up your game and fight back against the Krakens.

Anybody still remember the Kraken? The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham was one of the first sci-fi fiction novels I read, around age 11-12. Scary!
